Restaurer, is the French word meaning to restore, from the Latin restaurare. This gave us Restaurant in the 18 century. From this we were given Table d'hote, also known as the Host Table. This term described a place where multi-courses were indicated by choice on a prepaired menu and for a price.
Table d'hote derives from the fact that such a meal resembles those served to guests at home, where the table is set with linen and cutlery and the host has predetermined what the guests will be served.
